Kitchen Catechism: Prayers
The Lord's Prayer
One day Jesus was praying...
When He finished one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord teach us to pray.” He taught them what today is the “Lord’s Prayer” or “The Our Father”. It is a beautiful combination of praise, petition and penitence. So significant is this prayer of Jesus that it is offered every time the Eucharist is celebrated. Jesus told them to be persistent in praying and “Your Father already knows what you need before you ask Him.” (Matthew 6:8) From Luke 11:9 “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you”.
St. Louis de Montfort tells us: The Our Father contains all the duties we owe to God, the acts of all the virtues and the petitions for all our spiritual and corporal needs.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed by thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
